Led by pianist and composer Jeff Haas, BIG FUN brings together some of Michigan’s most distinctive musicians for a genre-bending mix of jazz, funk, world music and bluegrass. The Traverse City-based group features Haas on keys alongside Don Julin on mandola, Joe Wilson on pedal steel and dobro, Jack Dryden on six-string bass, and Randy Marsh on drums. Haas’s compositions draw from his deep roots in jazz, R&B, classical and Judaic music, while each musician brings a different musical language to the mix. The result is an inventive, groove-driven sound where jazz improvisation, funky rhythms, bluegrass textures and unexpected instrumental combinations all meet in the same room.
